What Lighting Do I Need for an Interview?

For a simple interview setup, you typically need a soft key light, a fill or bounce, and optional background lighting depending on the space.

Basic Setup

• Key Light → main light on the subject (soft, flattering)
• Fill Light / Bounce → reduces shadows
• Background Light (optional) → adds depth and separation

Typical Kit

A simple interview lighting kit might include:

• LED panel or soft light (key light)
• Reflector or secondary light (fill light)
• Light stands and basic cables/grip

For larger spaces or higher production value, additional lights can be added to control the background and shape the scene.

Choosing the Right Light

Soft LED fixtures are commonly used for interviews as they provide:

• Even, flattering light on faces
• Quick setup and adjustment
• Adjustable colour/dimming for mixed lighting environments

Top Tips

• Give careful thought before using natural light for long interviews: weather can change.
• Move your subject away from the background for depth/seperation
• Keep it simple - too many lights from different angles will framing difficult for the camera operator
